ETAS conference 2012

Are you a tweeter, a blogger or a lurker?

Blogging

Why have a blog?

1. A teaching website keeps you organized and on track.
2. You’re creating an archive of your class – complete with the exact materials you’ve used.
3. You can post the answer keys and information.
4. It’s getting so easy to do that it can actually save you time
5. You have an easy answer to “What did I miss?” or “What will I miss?” for students going away.
6. Helicopter parents have an off-site landing pad
7. Have a blog to write about your passions, thoughts, ideas, trips, etc.
If you are worried about privacy , you can have a password protected one.
What more can you add?
Here are mine—
1  I store my ETAS papers etc on this one.  http://unresourcecentre.blogspot.com/
2  Here’s one I set up to help students prepare for the UN’s Language Proficiency Exam.
http://hrd.unctad.org/sdls/login/index.php   Username:  etasguest    Password: etas2012
This is how you can share documents with your students—set up a blog!
4  Or use  http://nicenet.org/ , a free website for teachers, designed by teachers.

Why use  Twitter?
1. You have a global community of professionals at hand.
2. It makes you keep up-to-date on a whole range of topics.
3. You get links to websites and blogs you would never have found.
4. You can personalize who you follow to your areas of interest.
5. You keep in touch with new developments.
6. Research shows students get more involved and better results if you use Twitter at uni in lectures.  See article below:

Twitter netiquette
Follow those who follow you—if they match your interests.  Thank them for following you.

Definitions of lurk

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/L/lurk.html
To eavesdrop on a chat room or conference. In most online areas, lurking is perfectly acceptable behaviour and is, in fact, encouraged so that you get the feel of the area before posting your own comments.
  Setting up your Twitter account
First part is about PLN—second part is about setting up your Twitter account.
Complete guide

Open a gmail account (or yahoo or hotmail—whatever you don’t already have) and let all the rubbish alerts (like from Facebook) go there.
